There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age. - - Sophia Loren

It may appear employers want youthful energy and technical savvy.  But, this doesn't mean they want candidates without wrinkles or grey hair, it really means they want candidates who can keep up with the times.

You can update your overall appearance and achieve a more youthful look without resorting to cosmetic surgery.  How?  Just read on . . .

"You" in person:

- Update your wardrobe without resorting to trends meant for 20-somethings

- Update your hairstyle without resorting to removing all of the grey

- Update your business speak without resorting to using phrases like "my bad"

Remember that "fire in the belly" you had when you first started your career (or anything new for that matter)?  The excitement and boundless energy you demonstrated in your work?  You were passionate and enthusiastic about your work and it showed.  If you're going to compete successfully within today's candidate pool filled with younger generations who just discovered their "fire in the belly", you are definitely going to have to show that you still have "it"!

"You" on paper:

bullet

Open your resume with a "Summary & Skills" section that highlights your transferable core competencies.

bulletTrim your resume to contain only the past 10-15 years of employment.  But be ready to supply details regarding your entire employment history if requested at the interview or on applications for employment, etc.
bulletRemove the dates from your education.  Don't remove all the dates from your resume as this may be considered "unethical".

Above all remember, your experience is valuable.  It's your job to get the "value message" across to your prospective employer/client.  Your years of experience lends credibility to what you have to offer, so help the prospect envision how you fit into their future.

I believe there is age discrimination being practiced "out there", people are being labeled "over qualified", etc.  But you can still get through that gate, it just takes a lot of work (on the part of the boomer), persistence, and above all - -a positive attitude.  Appearing "youthful" means being full of energy, showing a willingness to learn new things, being excited about working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and above all else knowing that your experience has given you the wisdom that only time can provide.

=======================

If "60" is the new "50" and "50" is the new "30"; then those in their 40's who are just coming into being "themselves" may be the most fabulous of all ages when it comes to making those career altering transitions.  But, let's forget the age labels for now and look at being fabulous at any age in your career.

Just starting out:  Summer is the time of year when many college graduates will be celebrating the completion of their education on Saturday; and going out into the "real world" to find their first job on Monday.  This can be a fabulous time for anyone who is clear on the fact that perfection is not absolute and that your first job is simply "your first job".  The first of many if you're like most people.  And today's youth are even banking on having a bunch of careers not just a bunch of jobs during their working lifetime.

This is a fabulous time for those who participate in their career with the vision to continually transform their current self into their ultimate self!

Making the leap:  More and more people are making the leap from doing "the same old thing" to doing "something new and different".  Traditionally, fast track people climb the ladder at lightning speed during their 30's and reach their highest earning capacity in their 40's.   For these overachievers, work life balance becomes a reality point as they invest 10-15-20 years in their career and find themselves approaching a self-imposed virtual mid-career-life crisis of sorts.  This can be a fabulous time for anyone who is reassessing their work/life priorities, taking stock in aligning their actions with the life they want to have; or looking to redirect their energy and rediscovering their passion.  It's all real.  Intuition and fact-finding tasks kick in as the mid-careerer looks to make a radical career change.

This is a fabulous time for people who are ready and willing to work towards the positive, not away from the negative!

Sailing into phased-retirement:  People who have invested 20-30-plus years in their career may find they are ready to ease into retirement.  This can be a fabulous time for anyone interested in "giving back" to their community; volunteering their time and expertise via various local or national organizations; mentoring, teaching, coaching next-generation leaders and practitioners; traveling, learning, growing.

This is a fabulous time for anyone who seeks a life of active leisure mixed with passion-filled work!
